DUBAI - Passenger traffic at the Dubai International Airport rose by two per cent in the first quarter to 9.5 million from 9.3 million during the same period last year, Dubai Airports said on Saturday.
January was the busiest month with passenger traffic rising six per cent from a year earlier to 3.3 million passengers, while cargo traffic increased marginally.
"This makes Dubai International the only airport among the world’s top 10 busiest airports in terms of international passenger volumes, to show positive growth both in the last quarter of 2008 and the first quarter of 2009," the company said in a statement.
Dubai Airports said that the total freight handled in the first quarter reached 425,172 tonnes compared to 423,291 tonnes during the same period in 2008. March was the busiest month for cargo at more than 159,301 tonnes, up nearly 3.5 per cent from a year ago, the company said.
"The results reaffirm Dubai’s position in the region, not only as the regional centre for tourism and business, but also an important aviation hub. I am hopeful we will grow steadily over the remainder of the year despite the global economic slowdown, and any recovery will only add to that growth," said Paul Griffiths, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Airports.
According to the statement, passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport went up by nine per cent to 37.44 million in 2008 from 34.34 million in 2007. Cargo tonnage rose by 9.4 per cent to 1.8 million tonnes in the same period.
