Middle East airlines post 16.5% traffic surge

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said that Middle East carriers recorded a 16.5 percent rise in passenger demand in November, outpacing the global air traffic growth of 2.1 percent, Khaleej Times reported.

IATA said that passenger numbers grew 5.1 percent for Asia-Pacific carriers and 8.2 percent in Latin America, but European and North American carriers recorded a 3 percent drop in demand.

The association noted that Latin American and Middle Eastern airlines benefited indirectly from the growth of Asian demand for commodities.

Dubai International Airport and other aviation hubs in the region have seen upswing in traffic, so are UAE carriers including Emirates, Etihad and Air Arabia.

IATA said that passenger demand is still 6.0 percent below peak levels reported in early 2008 and freight demand is 10 percent from highs recorded a year ago.
